Dragon Fire Preview

Great new game! Really enjoyed the feel of it. Easy to follow, great main character to get on board with. The graphics are great, very smooth and added to the overall enjoyment as did the sound effects and subtle soundtrack. I especially liked the mini games, great to play in a spare few minutes, the plinko game was ace!

Dragon Fire is another great release made in conjunction with Gamesalad. The graphics are instantly appealing, and are great for both children and adults alike. They are colourful and playful and engage the user. The games is organised over several levels taking the player on a journey through a variety of landscapes including deserts, forests and rocky ravines.

The screen scrolls through the various lands and the player is responsible for guiding the dragon, Una, through a series of well thought out obstacles, including flying pigs, cyclops, devils, evil penguins and snakes.  The dragons quest is to defeat Queen Hydra and being peace to the land. Help comes in the form of a phoenix which enables the player controlling Una to harbour extra fire power throughout the game. Collecting stars enables the user to unlock the mini games.

Each mini game requires a different number of stars to access and once open these remain free for the player to use in those spare few minutes that we all have; waiting for a bus or for other moments of boredom. The mini games include: Piggy Bank Plinko; Tower Escape and Protect the pigs.

Piggy Bank Plinko is a suitably challenging and at times frustrating game, which relies on the player releasing coins from a drop-bar at the top and sliding the pig backwards and forwards in order to collect as many as possible. This game can be played either as a time attack version or a still-shot game, both great fun! The aim of Tower escape is to move the Pig down the tower, avoiding falling boulders and collecting stars on the way. The graphics here a effective and offer a further tantalisng dimension to the game. Protect the pigs is a tap control game, where the purpose of the game is to protect the pigs from the goblins and is the final of the three mini games requiring the player to have amassed 5000 stars!- Quiet a feat!

This game benefits from using ear phones, or sound on to appreciate the sound effects and subtle soundtrack which adds to the overall gaming experience.  It is a value for money purchase, for those hunting for an entertaining and light-hearted game. It is the sort of game which you will want to return to navigate your way through the levels and to un-lock those all important mini-games!

Review: Meow Meow Happy Fight

mmhf_screen2

We have been playing Meow Meow Happy Fight for the past few days and we love it.  Essentially ‘Happy Fight’ is the death match simplified and it’s great.

Let me start from the beginning, Happy Fight is a top down arena shooter where you and multiple enemies must run about totting up as many frags as possible.  As always, around the arena are power ups and weapons which you use to damage and destroy your opponent.

This all sounds pretty straight forward so far.  Where it gets weird is the characters, collectibles and general premise of the game.  The battles are set in a vibrant Tokyo setting with neon lights and colourful set pieces.  The story is simple; in the future, everything is too happy so a cat from the future has come back to bring happiness and destruction… yes I did say that… It’s crazy, but so is everything about this game. Each of the weird and wonderful characters are contained with shield ball and these include hamsters, cats, people, ghosts, zombies and even cup of noodles to name a few.  More characters are unlockable as you collect ‘happy points’ from each bout.  As people die they spawn a varied selection of collectibles which help with random achievements which you need to see to believe (such as the Bento Box Achievement for collecting all the food which goes in the box???).

The graphics are lush with a neon, cute, Japanese styling and the sounds match it perfectly.  It’s Openfeint enabled so you can see online scores, gain achievements and play other people, however due to this being a pre-release version we could not test this aspect of the game.  However, playing solo was good enough for us as the enemy AI is great and the difficulty grows as you progress through the levels.  The shear wealth of unlockable characters and collectibles (which include, toilet rolls, melons, plunger, plasters, leaks and Piyo blocks), will keep you entertained for hours and given that this can be played over Openfeint should increase the longevity as well.

Overall, this is a game ideally suited for the platform, the controls are simple, the action is fun and the visuals are stunning, it’s the death match simplified and we love it.  Matches are short and frantic so you can dip in and out as you see fit.  I’m sure that this game will have an iPad version coming out soon and we look forward to seeing more of the arena as our only criticism would be that you can’t see enough of the game zone whilst playing.  However, this will be staying on our iPhones for a long time yet

Great Job Pixel Studios, a fun little shooter in a sea of crap apps!

Review: Doodle Bomb HD

Doodle games are all over the app store and second in popularity to zombie games. Due to the sheer amount of doodle games out there its hard to see them all.  However, whilst playing around with our ipad recently we got the promo code for Doodle Bomb HD and we thought we’d give it a try.

Doodle Bomb HD from AppChogie is a game where you have to do is defuse all the bombs before the fuses run out and blow all the bombs on the screen, sounds easy right! Well its not; the speed of the game is quick so a slight distraction from the screen can cause all sorts of problems. The bombs are spinning about in both directions each with a short  fuse so it takes a fast finger to get them all.

This game doesn’t break the mould for doodle games but it makes up for in simple addictive gameplay.  We passed it about the office expecting and found it had a strange power over us and the minutes turned to hours.

The graphics are what you expect from a doodle game and it has a happy  little tune to keep you amused.  There are no online leader boards or facebook/twitter integration which would help but the local scoreboard will have to keep to busy but if you are after a bit of fun to pass the time or even play with your children this is an easy to grasp but hard to master game that you can pick up and play when you want to leave the world behind you.

This review will explode in 3 second…     …   …

Game Review: Wizzley Presto and the Vampires Tomb

We heard about this game a few months back whilst reading up on our old 8 bit hero ‘Dizzy’.  Dizzy was an egg who had numerous adventures in the days of the spectrum and Amiga.  I believe his last outing was on the Sega Megadrive before the Oliver Twins and Codemasters had a falling out and poor Dizzy fell by the wayside.

This new game for the ipod and iphone follows in the footsteps of these games as you control Wizzley, a trainee wizard who is sent to save the kingdom from a returning evil in the form of a vampire.  You control Wizzley and explore a huge hand drawn world of puzzles, quests and fun. Along the way you’ll meet Kings, Princesses, Trolls and Witches.  The dialogue is great and the characters each have a personality of their own.

Visually the game looks fantastic and looks fresh whilst retaining its ‘retro’ roots.  As with the Dizzy games you can only carry three items at a time so much of the game involves tracking back and forth through the kingdom boiling, destroying, opening, activating and using.  Many of the younger gamers might find this style of game play tedious however due to the nature of the game we expected as much.

One thing that this game did that Dizzy didn’t was the use of eggs as weapons, which you can throw about the place to take out enemies, solve puzzles and hit these weird eye things which I have no idea what they do.

The two issues I did find was the positions of the controls as these felt unnatural and the lack of a jump button.  At first I thought it was broken but as far as I can tell, its supposed to be like that, however,  the confusion is increased by a lack of instructions.

The lack of a save game option is handled by the use of 3 chapters so as you complete one, another is unlocked and you start a fresh from there.

Overall Wizzley Presto is a traditional cartoon adventure game with some great visuals and funny dialogue and sweet music.  The game has several nods to the classic Dizzy series and is a magical adventure for the ipod and iphone.

Iron Man 2 – Closest you’ll get to being him!

Iron Man and Iron Man 2 I think we can agree is every boys dream, loads of money, Ms Potts at your beckon call and an Iron Man suit at your disposal!  The films are awesome but here’s a game brought to us by Gameloft that promises to deliver:

“…all the same action and excitement you’d expect from the movie with epic battles and massive enemies that will leave your chest pounding.”

I think that’s a fair promise, it’s a great game with a great sound track, ability to play as Iron Man or War Machine.  The upgradable armour is a fun addition which keeps your interest and the roam-free is fun for just flying around!

Developers Overview (Gameloft):

Play as Iron Man for speed and agility or suit up as War Machine for maximum firepower. Both suits offer easy-to-learn controls and the ability to run, hover and fly at will. You’ll also have the chance to jump into the Mark IV, Mark VI, Stealth and underwater suits. Whether you prefer to pound your foes in melee combat with your fists or to lay down the destruction from a far with your weapons, you can upgrade your suit after each stage with improved weaponry and abilities to devastate your foes.

Retails in the app store at $6.99
